THE REEFER MADNESS ERA
MAIN MAGAZINE INDEX

MUSEUM OF REEFER MADNESS MAGAZINE INDEX LIST:

The following is what we (at the museum) feel is that best listing of Reefer Madness Magazines articles available anywhere. Note that not ALL of the articles are from the Reefer Madness era; a good example being an 1858 article first published in the "Methodist Quarterly Review." Obviously due to the date, it is NOT a Reefer Madness article per say, but still of some interest to the scholar. Wherever possible (meaning the copyright laws) these articles are available in electronic format from the museum society.

FEDERAL PROBATION: - Publication of the Bureau of Prisons, Department of Justice
[e]- "Marihuana" By Lawrence Kolb (Assistant Surgeon General) - pg. 22, July 1938 Article contains statements such as: - "In some the sex impulse seems to be aroused" - "Continued use of the drug causes insanity in many cases." Etc., etc., but the importance of this article lies NOT in it's message, but in the author who would in later years turn against Drug Laws in general. (I guess there is hope after all.) Already, statements such as, "The prevalent opinion that anyone who smokes a marihuana cigarette … will have criminal impulses is an error" start to appear. He also argues for sentencing marihuana (addicts) to treatment not prisons. It is with deep sorrow that I must give the article a 4-Star reefer madness rating, I would a hundred times, rather be issuing a medal to the man. [4-Star]
